INS Tihayu (T93) is a patrol vessel of the Car Nicobar-class of Indian Navy and the third ship in the series of four Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC). Named after Tihayu island of Nicobar archipelago the ship can have an additional package of about 11 machine guns of different variants. [3] The ship equipped with enhanced firepower is capable of operating in shallow waters at high speed. Suited for extended coastal and offshore surveillance and patrol, production of the Car Nicobar-class ships by GRSE was fast-tracked after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. INS Tihayu (T93), the second ship of the four Follow-On Waterjet Fast Attack Craft built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 19 October 2016. The primary role of the patrol craft is anti-piracy, rapid interception, induction of landing parties, coastal surveillance and search and rescue operations in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. With an overall length of 49 metres, breath of 7.5 metres and a standard displacement of 320 tons, the ship is capable of speed in excess of 35 knots. The ship’s combat capability is augmented by the indigenously built 30 mm gun and IGLA missile. The ship derives her name from the ‘Tihayu Island’, also known as the ‘Katchal Island’ belonging to the Nicobar Island archipelago. The ship’s crest depicts a Blue and Black ‘Sea Horse’ with the characteristic curved tail against a Blue background. This has a relevance to Indian mythology, where it is identified as Lord Varun’s ‘Vahana’. The ship’s motto ‘Swift and Sure’ signifies the ship’s mainstay – her ability to do sustained high speeds and crew’s steadfast pledge – ‘To Accomplish all Assigned Goals in the Face of Adversity.
