INS Khanjar, the fourth in the series of indigenously built missile corvettes by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd, was commissioned into the #IndianNavy on 22 October 1991. Armed to the teeth, the ship forms an integral part of the Eastern Fleet. She is manned by a crew of 14 officers and 147 sailors. The primary role of the ship is to provide first strike offensive through SSM attack on enemy units at sea or on shore based installations, provide close range Anti-Missile Defence to the Carrier Battle Group and guard harbours and coastal installations. In peacetime, her role includes protection of India’s maritime exclusive zone, countering piracy and terrorism and maritime diplomacy. It is a matter of immense pride that the design features that enable her to operate in this high risk environment are wholly Indian in concept and execution. The ship is affiliated to the highly decorated Kumaon and Naga Regiments of the #IndianArmy. 'Khanjar’ is named after a traditional hand-held weapon used in combat. The crest design displays two crossed Khanjars against a Red background with Blue and White ocean waves in the lower half.
