indiannavy #KnowYourNavy Indian Naval Ship Hamla was commissioned into the #IndianNavy on 06 January 1954. The primary role of the establishment is to train officers and sailors including personnel from #IndianArmy, #IndianAirForce, Coast Guard, BSF and friendly foreign navies in the fields of logistics, management administration, computers and catering duties at various levels. The unit has been designated as the Joint Services Training Institute (Catering) w.e.f 17 September 2018, wherein personnel from Indian Army and Indian Air Force are trained along with the naval counterparts in the field of catering and hospitality. The establishment has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune on 25 June 2018, for certification of the IT Managers and IT Basic courses, being conducted in the unit, for officers and sailors respectively. The establishment has been named ‘Hamla’, an Urdu word, which means ‘to attack’. The crest depicts five swords pointing upwards against the background of Blue and White sea waves. The Sanskrit motto ‘Shradhavan Labhte Gyanam’ means ‘one who is sincere and devoted attains knowledge’. HMIS Hamla originally was a combined operations base at Malir, Karachi and at Versova, Mumbai known as Hamla-I and Hamla-II respectively. Both these bases were amalgamated into HMIS Hamlawar. During World War II, the present site of INS Hamla at Marve Road, Malad (West) was a part of the combined Operations Training Centre of the Royal Indian Navy. Commissioned on 06 May 1943, this training centre was named HMIS Hamlawar. It was later split into Indian and British Wings, the former retaining the original name and the latter adopting the name HMS Marve. On 15 January 1946, the RN Base at Marve and the craft stationed there were taken over by the Royal Indian Navy, with Hamla-I and Hamla-II being amalgamated with it and the entire establishment was renamed as HMIS Hamla. After independence, the unit was re-commissioned as INS Hamla on 06 January 1954.
