Indian Naval Ship Tarangini, the first Sail Training Ship, was commissioned into the #IndianNavy on 11 November 1997. The ship is a ‘three-masted barque’, which means that she is square rigged on the fore and mainmast and fore and aft rigged on the mizzen mast. The vessel is steel hulled with an aluminum deckhouse and teak wood interiors. She carries 20 sails with a sail area of almost 10, 000 square feet and has sailed over 2, 20, 000 nautical miles since commissioning. The ship can remain at sea continuously for a period of over 20 days and is manned by a complement of eight officers and forty sailors as her permanent crew and can also accommodate and impart sail training to 30 trainees. The primary role of the ship is to foster virtues of courage, esprit-de-corps and endurance in the trainees and provide an ideal setting for experiencing the elements first-hand. The training imparted onboard includes, basics of sailing, setting and furling of sails, watch-keeping and manoeuvres using sail. Over the years, the ship has been deployed extensively for various missions and has successfully undertaken one Circumnavigation of the Globe (2003-04) and four Lokayans (2005, 2007, 2015 and 2018). The meaning of name 'Tarangini’ is river in Hindi and the crest depicts a mother swan teaching her progeny to fly, signifying the training role of the Sail Training Ship, with Blue and White ocean waves in the lower half.
