INS Delhi, a guided missile destroyer, was commissioned into the #IndianNavy on 15 November 1997. The Delhi class ships are one of India’s largest and most modern warships fully designed and built in the country and are a testimony to the high level of technological advancement, ship design and building capabilities achieved by India over the years. At 6, 900 tonnes displacement, length of 163 metres, breadth of 17.4 metres and a crew of 350 personnel, the ship is capable of speed in excess of 30 knots. The ship is equipped with an array of weapons and sensors, including surface to surface and surface to air missiles, surface and anti-air guns, torpedoes and rockets, which enable her to undertake three-dimensional warfare in a multi-threat environment and serve as a command and control platform for fleet operations. The ship has completed 21 years of service to the nation and has participated in numerous operations, which include Operation Rainbow, Madad, Octopus, Tulip and Crossbow. ‘Delhi' has been named after the capital of India. The name Delhi was first given to the erstwhile ‘Leander Class’ light cruiser, which was a 7, 030 tonnes behemoth, originally commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Achilles and saw action in World War II. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 05 July 1948 and was rechristened INS Delhi. The ship became the first flag ship of the Indian Navy and the name was retained for the first indigenous destroyer. The crest depicts a powerful elephant carrying a howdah symbolising the majestic seat of the Ruler of India. There is also a small lotus in the lower part of the crest. The motto in Sanskrit, ‘Sarvato Jayamichhami’ means ‘I Covet Victory Everywhere Best NDA class in Pune ( Dignitary )
